Revelation 10:1-3

In Revelation 10:1-3 is a description of another angel, “coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire.” (Revelation 10:1, NKJV). It may be hard for us to not think of this angel being Jesus; this angel is clothed with a cloud, and we know that Jesus will return with the clouds (Matthew 24:30-31, Luke 21:27-28; Revelation 1:7). Jesus declares in Luke 21:27-28, “Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” This “great glory” (Luke 21:27) could also be reflective of John’s comments in Revelation 10:1 that, “his face was like the sun.”

We also learn in Revelation 10:1 that the feet of this angel were “like pillars of fire.” Jesus declared in Luke 12:49, “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!” We learn in Revelation 10:2, “he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,” We learn in Revelation 10:3, that this angel “cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars.” We know from Hosea 11:10 that the LORD “will roar like a lion.” In Revelation 10:3b, “When he cried out, seven thunders uttered their voices.” In Psalm 77:18 and Revelation 14:2 is a thundering voice from heaven which may be described as the voice of God. These seven thunders in Revelation 10:3b-4 may be the completeness of God’s voice as the number seven is representative of completeness, and the seventh trumpet is being prepared to sound.

This is an example of the completeness of God being represented in this mighty angel coming down from heaven.

Being clothed in a cloud represents the completed plan of salvation for mankind as Jesus will return with the clouds (Revelation 1:7); the rainbow, the sun, and the pillars of fire represent the destruction by flood that has already taken place during the life of Noah (Genesis 6-8). The sun is representative of God’s glory, and the pillars of fire are representative of the wrath of God to come by fire (Luke 12:49) as the completeness of God’s plan of salvation for mankind and the kingdom of heaven will be proclaimed with the sounding of the seventh trumpet.

Dear LORD,

We are in awe of your great plan of salvation for mankind coming to completeness as we are beginning to see throughout Your Word the plan coming together through Christ Jesus and of how Your Word leads us to You from Genesis to Revelation. Please help us to open our hearts to Jesus and put You first in our lives unto salvation. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
