Philippians 1:19-26
In Philippians 1:19-26 the Apostle Paul contemplates his possible physical death as he writes this letter from prison and is unsure of the outcome. He asks for the prayers from the Christians at Philippi for his deliverance and to stand with boldness in Christ Jesus whatever the outcome. One of Paul’s most notable statements is found in Philippians 1:21 (NKJV) as he declares, “21For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Paul then contemplates the possible outcome for both, life or death. If he remains in the flesh there will be more opportunities to share the message of the gospel and lead others to salvation in Christ Jesus [his calling in ministry (Acts 9:15-16)]. If he dies, he will then go on to be with the Lord for eternity [“which is far better” (Philippians 1:23c)]. He concludes in Philippians 1:24-26, “24Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for our progress and joy of faith, 26that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.”
This is an example of the challenges of a Christian life following the will of God.
We all have a calling to share the message of the gospel with others in hopes that we may lead them to salvation in Christ Jesus. The trials and tribulations we will face throughout this journey are guided by God and His Holy Spirit working and leading us through each step of the way. How long we will live or when we will die is up to God’s will for our lives; the important thing for us is to continue sharing God’s love for us with others until that day comes – in Christ.
Dear LORD,
We all know one thing; that one day we will die. Please help us and lead us while we are alive and able to share Your great love for us with others so that we may bring glory to You in leading lost souls to Your saving grace. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
