Matthew 6:31-34
In Matthew 6:25-30 Jesus teaches His disciples about worrying by giving examples of the love that God has for those who believe in Him, as this teaching is to those who have already put their faith in Jesus (disciples) (Matthew 5:1-2). Jesus began this passage on worry by giving a command to not worry (Matthew 6:25). He then asks the question in Matthew 6:28 (NKJV) of “So why do you worry about clothing?” after explaining how important we are to God and of how He will most certainly take care of us (Matthew 6:25-29). He then, in Matthew 6:31 and Matthew 6:34 gives the command two more times, “Therefore do not worry…” and gives the comparison of those who worry are the Gentiles, which at the time of this teaching, the door to salvation for the Gentiles had not yet been opened and is an expression from Jesus referring to those who are not believers – and even more – the Gentile nations, being those who are not God’s chosen people and are outside of God’s blessings. Then Jesus gives the point at which He is striving to make, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:33-34).
This is a command, example, and promise to put your faith in God and give Him your worries as He is able and willing to help you through them if you will give them to Him.
Jesus, throughout His teachings, is striving to help His hearers come to a saving faith in God. All those who Jesus healed and saved from sin are noted as believing that Jesus could heal them and that Jesus could save them; there is no passage in the Bible of Jesus healing or saving someone from sin in which the person did not believe in Him. The Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 10:9-10 (NIV), “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with our mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Put your faith in Jesus today and give Him all your worries; He will set you free from them if you will believe in Him.
Dear LORD,
We are stricken with the worries and anxieties of the day. This world is moving so fast that it is hard for us to keep up with the events of our lives. Please touch our hearts with Your Holy Spirit and give us the calming release from our worries as we give them to You and trust in You to see us through. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
