Matthew 6:28-30
Jesus has come to profess the gospel of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 4:17). Part of this “good news” is to inform people that God is worthy to provide for all of His creation, and that includes His greatest creation – mankind. Jesus teaches His disciples in Matthew 6:28-30 that they should not worry about their choice of clothing for the day as God is faithful and will provide. Jesus states in Matthew 6:28b-29 (NKJV), “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; And yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” Jesus teaches His disciples in Matthew 6:30 that if God will clothe the, “grass of the field” in such splendor, He will much more take care of those who put their faith in Him.
This is a command to not worry about insignificant things as God is faithful to provide for our needs.
This is a promise that God’s beauty is seen in nature, and in the beauty that He has given the flowers of the field, He desires more that we put our faith in Him.
We are each a masterpiece of beauty to God. While it can be comforting to have nice clothing, we will never surpass the beauty that God has given to nature, yet we are more precious to God than any of the magnificent splendor that we see in nature. It is not the clothing that we wear that makes us beautiful in God’s eyes, but our faith in Him in believing that He is our Creator and Sustainer of life. Jesus said to His disciple Thomas in John 20:29, (ESV), “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” The Apostle John goes on to write in the very next verse (John 20:30), “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Dear LORD,
We have a tendency to get caught up in the things of this world and put more focus on the clothing that we will wear today than on our faith and relationship with You. Please help us to get our focus on the things that matter most, which is having a pure and sincere heart to seeking Your will for our lives that we may bring glory to You through our obedience to You. Thank You for providing salvation for us through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus that we all may be saved from the sins of this world and cleansed by Your grace and mercy – in Christ! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
