Matthew 6:25-27

“Therefore,” Jesus states, because the eye is the lamp of our body and it can only shine outwardly what it takes in, be it good or bad, and because we can only serve one master be it good or bad, Jesus says in Matthew 6:25 (NKJV), “…do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”  Jesus goes on to explain that God takes care of the needs of the birds that have no storage place to gather food, yet He feeds them.  Jesus teaches us that we are much more important to God than the birds, and that in so He will provide for us.  Jesus explains in Matthew 6:27 that worrying does us no good by asking the question, “Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”

This is a command to not have worrying in our lives as God is in control and will provide for those who believe in Him.

We must keep in mind that Jesus is speaking and teaching His disciples in this passage.  That means that a prerequisite in this teaching is to believe in Him.  We will soon study the words of Jesus as they pertain to this teaching in Matthew 6:33 as He teaches, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”  Christianity is a faith-based religion; that means that we must believe in our God – that He is capable to provide for us the things that we have no control over – we must believe that God will provide our needs for us if we put and keep our faith in Him.

Dear LORD,

We all have many things in our lives that we worry about; it shows our caring for others and our concern for the well-being of our loved ones and for ourselves.  There are many things that are out of our control and in need of Your loving hands to take from us and to comfort us that all will be well if we will simply put and keep our trust in You.  Please help us to see that You work things out for the well-being of those who believe in You.  Please help us to see that by putting our faith in Jesus, we are giving our trust to You – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
