Matthew 6:10

As Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray, we have learned in Matthew 6:9 that the prayer should begin with giving acknowledgement to God in respect for how great is His name above all.  The next sentence of this prayer is to give acknowledgement in expectation for God’s kingdom to come and rule supremely for eternity.  This can, and I believe should first refer to God’s spiritual reign in our hearts as we spread the gospel message of salvation in Christ Jesus and also in expectation of the return of Jesus when He shall return and make the new heaven on earth.  Jesus declares in Luke 17:20-21 (NKJV), “Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, ‘The kingdom of God does not come with observation: nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’  For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”  But the Bible also teaches us in Revelation 21:1-3 (HCSB), “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea no longer existed.  I also saw the Holy City, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.

“Then I heard a loud voice from the throne:

“Look! God’s dwelling is with humanity,

and He will live with them.

They will be His people,

and God Himself will be with them

and be their God.”

But we must not overlook the second part of Matthew 6:10 which states,

“Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.”

When Jesus gave this prayer to His disciples, He was intending for the hearts of His disciples to be seeking God’s will for their lives as is the basic mindset of a follower of Jesus.  These are not simply good words to say in prayer but a way of life – a new mindset that has taken over the old mindset of the ways of this world.  It is a mindset that puts God and His will for our lives first, above all.

But there is more to this mindset of putting God and His will first in our lives as disciples of Jesus.  This mindset should be seeking the will of God, “On earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10c).

This is the desires of the heart and the mindset of a disciple of Jesus.

This prayer was given by Jesus for those who believe in Him to pray.  When Jesus gave this prayer to His disciples, He had not yet been crucified; the price for all sin had not yet been paid.  The Scripture passages that I have quoted above are all in support of this prayer but are all realizations that came after the crucifixion of Jesus.  God did not send His Holy Spirit until after the crucifixion of Jesus.  “Your kingdom come.  Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.”  This is a prayer given in hope and excited expectation of the things to come in the fulfillment of the law through the saving power of the mission of Jesus on this earth.  As we look into the mind of Christ Jesus in giving this prayer to His disciples/followers, it is prayer to help support His earthly being and ministry that is still yet, as His humanity, is in need of support to give Him strength to complete His mission on earth.  Yes, His divine spiritual being will help Him to overcome this world, but in accomplishing His earthly mission, He is required to feel/experience the aches and pains of humanity in being the sacrifice that defeats the cause of them.  Please believe me when I say this: Jesus feels your aches and pains; He goes through your trials and tribulations with you; and He has already overcome them for you when He accomplished His mission on earth in and through His crucifixion and resurrection.  Jesus is victory for all who will believe in Him.  Put your faith in Jesus today and be set free from the mindset and heartache of this world, and allow the peace of Christ Jesus to rule in your heart, mind, and soul.

Dear LORD,

“Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

Please let this be our mindset and heart’s desire as we are the disciples of Jesus today.  Please fill us with Your Holy Spirit as Jesus has accomplished the mission in which this prayer was intended to give Him support in His earthly body to fulfill.  Please let Your kingdom come and Your will be done in our hearts and minds on earth as it is in heaven as Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:10 in the way that we should pray.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
