Matthew 28:9-10

We learn in Matthew 28:9-10 that as Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, in obedience to the angel of the Lord’s instructions, were on their way to tell Jesus’ disciples the good news, they were rewarded for their obedience.  Jesus met them along the way and encouraged them to “Rejoice!” (Matthew 28:9, NKJV).  They fell at His feet and worshiped Him as Jesus further encouraged them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me” (Matthew 28:10).

This is an example of the blessings that will come to all who believe and follow God’s will for their lives.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were not expecting to see Jesus on their way to tell His disciples the good news; they were simply following God’s will for their lives as they had been instructed by the angel of the Lord (Matthew 28:1-8).  Their obedience to God, and their taking action to follow God’s instructions for their lives was the reason for their special visit by Jesus.  This resulted in further encouragement for these women along with the confidence to “not be afraid” as Jesus comforts them in Matthew 28:10 and also from the angel of the Lord in Matthew 28:5.

We cannot do things for God with the expectations of being rewarded as if we deserve the reward.  But if our hearts are in obedience to following God’s will for our lives and our intentions are to be pleasing to God, His blessings are sure to come – not when we expect them to, but when His timing is right for them.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see today that Your blessings come to us not by our expectations but by being obedient to You in seeking and following Your will for our lives.  Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to You seeking You, and You found them when they least expected and in ways that they could never have expected that were beyond anything they could have ever imagined.  Please help us to see that You are willing to work in our lives the same way if we will come to You seeking Your will for our lives.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
