Matthew 27:38-44

In Matthew 27:38-44 we learn of the continued mockery of Jesus.  But as previously the mocking was done by the Roman guards (Matthew 27:27-31), we now learn that others joined in as well.  These were the common man/passer by (Matthew 27:39) and then the chief priests, scribes, and elders (Matthew 27:41-43)Matthew 27:38 informs us that two criminals were crucified with Jesus, and they too joined in on the mockery of Jesus.  So as we evaluate the information of those who mocked Jesus at His crucifixion we learn that everyone, Jews, Gentiles, the lowly, and those who considered themselves above all have all made a mockery of Jesus in this moment of His fulfilling His promise and mission to save the world from sin.

This is an example of all the world being in sin and against Jesus.

As we have been studying the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, we have learned that Jesus, in God’s great plan of salvation for the world, was required to take the sins of man to the cross by Himself.  As Jesus is being crucified, we see that all the world was against Jesus and mocked Him; Jews, Gentiles, convicts, free, and the most highly regarded religious leaders of the day.  Jesus was truly by Himself on the cross without even His disciples – His students that He taught throughout His ministry there to support Him.  The words of Jesus come to mind as He pleads with God in Matthew 26:39 (NKJV), “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”  There was no other way but that Jesus go to the cross to pay the price for sin – for all the sins of humanity.

Dear LORD,

Thank You for lowering Yourself to come into this earthly world in the form of Your creation as a man, that You would do this simply because You are love and because You created man to have a relationship with You in sharing Your love with us.  That bond was broken, and You came to restore what was lost as love knows no bounds but will go wherever it needs, because that what Your love does; it reaches out into the darkness to bring us back into the fold.  Thank You LORD for saving us from sin.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
