Matthew 26:57-58

In Matthew 26:57-58 Jesus is arrested.  He is led away to Caiaphas the high priest, who would soon play a big part in prophesying about Jesus being the only One who should die instead of a whole nation.

But before that happens, Peter will deny Jesus three times as Jesus has foretold in Matthew 26:34.  Immediately after Jesus is arrested, we learn in Matthew 26:58 (NKJV), “58But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard.  And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.”  We have just learned in Matthew 26:56b, “Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.”  But now we learn that as Peter disappeared in the darkness, he followed to see where they would take Jesus.  As Peter enters the high priest’s courtyard he is sure to encounter some who do not believe in Jesus.  We’ll soon find out how he would react in this situation.

This is the arrest of Jesus, alone as His disciples fled.

We too flee when we see the accuser coming.  We become the accuser when blame is to be given.  I believe that this is a result of our change in behavior due to sin – to blame someone else when trouble arises.  We like to point at someone else to take the blame.  But that God would open our eyes to see that someone else did take the blame for our sins – Jesus humbly took the blame for all our sins, and in Matthew 26:57 was arrested while being innocent.  I believe that we are pointing to someone else with the wrong intentions; I believe that we should be pointing to Jesus and saying, “Look the One who paid for my sins – Jesus, I owe all to Him.”

Dear LORD,

You sent Your One and only Son to teach us of the lives that You desire for us to live in our hearts, sincerely.  You sent Your One and only Son to save us from sin.  He is Jesus, the Savior of the world.  Please open our eyes to the good news – the good news of Your kingdom of heaven – in Christ!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
