Matthew 26:26-30

In Matthew 26:26-30 is Matthew’s recording of the Last Supper and what we refer to as communion.  Jesus sat with His disciples and broke bread and gave it to them to eat as it represents His body being torn and broken, and He gave them the cup to drink from as it represents His blood that was shed for many for the remission of sins.  He declares in Matthew 26:28 a new covenant as He states, “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

This is the declaration of Jesus becoming the Passover Lamb who was slain for all who will put their faith in Him.

The first Passover lamb was slain and required to be eaten entirely on the night of the Passover as was the instructions given by God (Exodus 12).  The blood of the Passover lamb was to be placed on the two doorposts and on the lintel (crossbeam) above the doorposts (Exodus 12:7).  The firstborn in all the land of Egypt would be destroyed that night, but the houses that had the blood of the lamb on the doorposts and the lintel would not be stricken (Exodus 12:12-13).

The lamb was consumed by them; it was inside their bodies.  And the blood of the lamb was their protection from the wrath of God as they were obedient to God’s instructions.  Jesus is now declaring that this is His blood that will be on the doorposts and the lintel of your hearts.  And it is His body that you are taking within you through God’s Holy Spirit indwelling you as you profess Him Savior and Lord.  It is His blood that will protect you from God’s wrath against sin when you stand before Him in heaven.  Jesus is the culmination of the Old Testament as He declares in Matthew 26:28 (NKJV), “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

Dear LORD,

1 John 1:5-7 states, “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.  If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”  And he continues in 1 John 1:9 declaring, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  Please help us to see that it is Jesus’ blood that cleanses us from sin and sets us free from it – in Christ – for eternity.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
