Matthew 25:20-23

As we continue our study of the parable told by Jesus in Matthew 25:14-30, today we will look at Matthew 25:20-23.  These two servants were given talents of different proportions but yet both utilized their talents to produce a harvest; they put into action the talents they were given so that they could be productive for there lord.  When their lord returned and saw that they had produced a harvest for him, they were rewarded for the work they had done for their lord.  In each case, as is stated in Matthew 25:21, 23 (NKJV), their lord said to them, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things.  Enter into the joy of your lord.”

This is a promise of a reward for utilizing the talents that God gives to each of us; the talents are of different proportions but are equally important in following God’s will for our lives to bring glory to Him through our lives.

We like to classify things/gifts/talents as if we are striving to declare that one is better than another, but the truth is that the gifts/talents that God gives each of us is tailor made for the individual that is receiving it.  When we meet God face to face, we will not have to account for the gifts/talents that someone else has been given, but just for the gift/talents that we each are given.  If we concentrate on the gift/talents that God gives each of us, and put those gifts/talents into action for Christ Jesus and how He is leading us in our individual journeys with Him, He will reward us equally in heaven.  It is not a competition with our fellow Christians to see who can do more for the Lord, but following Jesus in a collaboration of our gifts/talents to make up the whole of God’s plan for us all – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

The Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, “For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free – and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.  For in fact the body is not one member but many.”  Please help us to see the importance of the individual gifts/talents You give us LORD so that we may individually utilize those gifts/talents to the building of the Church and help the body of Christ function as a whole.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
