Matthew 22:41-46

Jesus has just taught the Sadducees that God is the God of the living and yet is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  He declares in Matthew 22:32b (NKJV), “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”  He then quotes Scripture to the Pharisees tying all the Law into two simple commandments as being the “great commandment” in Matthew 22:36-40.  Jesus states in Matthew 22:37-40, “37Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’ [Deuteronomy 6:5]38This is the first and great commandment.  39And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’ [Leviticus 19:18]40On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

In answering their questions, Jesus has paved a road to His question that ties Himself to God in Spirit as being one in the same.  In Matthew 22:42 Jesus asks them, “What do you think about the Christ?  Whose Son is He?”  They gave a correct answer of “The Son of David”, which leads to the next question from Jesus being, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:

44         ‘The LORD said to my Lord,

            “Sit at My right hand,

Till I make Your enemies Your

                      footstool”’? [Psalm 110:1] (Matthew 22:43-44).

In Matthew 22:45 Jesus asks them a third and final question that proves the resurrection to the Sadducees (who did not believe in resurrection), and to the Pharisees of His divine relationship with God in heaven through the Spirit as the asks them, “45If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?”  At this, the Pharisees and Sadducees ceased from questioning Jesus any further as is stated in Matthew 22:46, “46And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.”

It is believed one of two things happened at that moment: (1) The Pharisees and Sadducees were completely baffled at the questioning of Jesus and left speechless.  (2) The Sadducees realized that resurrection is possible in Spirit.  And the Pharisees realized that Jesus truly is the Son of God made in the form of man but connected to God through His Holy Spirit as One.

This is the proving moment of Jesus being God in human form and the sum of all Scripture unto redemption and righteousness.

The Bible is God’s infallible Word made flesh in the form of Jesus the Christ who was sent by God to save the world from sin (John 1:1-4, 14, 17, 3:16-17).  If you would like to debate these things with Him in prayer, I urge you to do so as He is very convincing to one who comes to Him with an open and sincere heart.

Dear LORD,

You are Almighty God.  You are the Creator of all.  You have come into this physical world to save us from the power of sin that Satan has chained us in.  Only You have the power to break the chains of Satan through Your physical death and resurrection in Christ Jesus.  Please open our eyes so that we may see and open our ears so that we may hear – in Christ!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
