Matthew 20:1-7

Jesus continues His teaching about those who will inherit eternal life as He begins a parable launched from His declaration in Matthew 19:30 (NKJV), “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”  And He continues in Matthew 20:1, “For the kingdom of heaven is like…,” and He then tells a parable of a landowner who hired workers early in the morning, at the third hour, the sixth hour, the ninth hour, and the eleventh hour.

Historically, the men available for work would gather at the entrance to the town in hopes of being hired for the day by the landowners as each landowner had different work requirements each day.  The best workers were hired first, and then the others were taken as needed, leaving the least of the workers possibly without work for the day if not needed.

In the parable that Jesus taught about the kingdom of heaven, the landowner came and hired all who were present and willing to work.  As the day went on, more and more people became willing to work, and the landowner, without prejudice, hired them (Matthew 20:3-7).

This is a promise that God will accept you at any time of the day if you are willing.

The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who is always willing to accept you if you are willing to come to Him seeking a way of life.  It doesn’t matter what time of day it is…God is always waiting and watching for you to come to Him.  Come to the Almighty Landowner today and He will supply a new way of life for you too!

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see through this parable of Jesus that to receive eternal life, we must come to You in obedience seeking a way of life.  Please help us to see that before You can offer us a way of life, we must come to You seeking it – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
