Matthew 1:6b

The story of David being anointed king is found in 1 Samuel 16:1-13.  The story of King David and the wife of Uriah is found in 2 Samuel 11 in that this was an adulterous union that bore a child that died as a result of David’s disobedience to God (2 Samuel 12:15b-23).  But this did not end the adulterous union of King David and the wife of Uriah (Bathsheba) but bore him a second child whose name was Solomon (2 Samuel 12:24).

This is the genealogy of Jesus from David to Solomon.

King David did wrong in the eyes of God in his quest and desire for Bathsheba (the wife of Uriah) (2 Samuel 11:26-27).  God punished David for his sin (2 Samuel 12), but we also find that David realized his sin (2 Samuel 12:13) and after the punishment for David’s sin was complete God blessed his next child, Solomon (2 Samuel 12:24-25).

Even this blessing from God to David’s son Solomon is somewhat hard for us to see as we have our natural sinful nature working from within us that would punish David forever with Bathsheba.  But God does not see things as we do (Isaiah 55:8-9)(Thank You LORD!) as we would have everyone, everywhere, condemned for all eternity.  But that is where we cannot fathom the love of God and the forgiveness that He offers to everyone who acts on being convicted of sin by acknowledging it and asking His forgiveness with a repentant heart, just as did King David.  God is faithful and will forgive you.  But He desires and requires your sincerity in asking of forgiveness (Romans 10:9-13).

Dear LORD,

You alone are wise, and You alone are worthy of our praise and worship.  In our obedience to You we bring You glory, but it is in our sinful nature to stray from Your great love for us.  Please convict us of sin and lead us to sincere, humble, repentant hearts that we would put aside our sinful nature and seek Your love and forgiveness each day that we would bring You glory through our lives – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
