Matthew 14:34-36

In Matthew 14:34-36 is a lesson that we will only see and understand if we have some understanding for the events of Matthew 13:53-58.  In one event that is recorded in Matthew 13:53-58 is an example of people who did not believe in Jesus and were actually “offended” at Him (Matthew 13:57, NKJV).  The result was, as the Apostle Matthew states in Matthew 13:58, “Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”

The opposite is true of the people that Jesus found in the land of Gennesaret.  The Bible teaches us in Matthew 14:35-36, “And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment.  And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.”  These people were so excited that Jesus had come to them that they spread the word of His coming throughout all the land so that everyone would be aware that Jesus was there and they could all come and see Him.  They brought everyone in need to Him and then begged Jesus to heal them; in fact, they had such great belief in Jesus that they only sought to touch His clothing to feel His healing power in their lives – and the Bible teaches us, “And as many as touched it were made perfectly well” (Matthew 14:36b).

This is an example of the power in Christ Jesus for all who put their faith in Him.

Believing is the key.  Jesus tells His disciples in Mark 16:15-16 (HCSB), “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”  Our belief in the power of Christ Jesus opens the door to action – action in sharing the gospel with the world so all may hear, believe, receive, and take action in their faith.  If we refuse to believe, no action will be taken.  Believe in Jesus today and receive life everlasting that will fill your heart to action in telling others about Jesus.

Dear LORD,

Your Holy Spirit works today in our lives through our belief in You and the salvation that You provide for all who will believe (John 3:16-17).  Please open our eyes to Jesus and help us to have the courage to share our belief in You with others so that all may know of Jesus and come to Him to be healed.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
