Matthew 12:31-32

This passage begins with the word “Therefore” and indicates a reference to the previous statement or happening.  In this case, the Pharisees have accused Jesus of being Satan.  This is directly related to the unforgivable sin.  Jesus, as God and man, came to save the world from sin, and this is reflective of the forgiveness that He and only He offers to all of humanity that will open their hearts to Him and realize the need for the forgiveness that only He offers unto salvation.  Jesus came to offer forgiveness, and He will forgive you too if you ask Him with a sincere heart in an understanding of the obedience to Him in welcoming the change from living a life of willful sin to a following of His teachings and guidance through His Holy Spirit.

The unforgivable sin, as Jesus describes, is sin against His Holy Spirit.  Jesus teaches us in John 14:15-18 (NKJV), “If you love me, keep My commandments.  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”  And in John 14:26 Jesus declares, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”  The key to understanding this passage is that if one sins against God’s Holy Spirit, then obviously that person is not open to receiving in obedience to God the forgiveness and filling of His Holy Spirit.  If a person never opens their heart to receive the gift of salvation through Christ Jesus and the forgiveness that only He offers, then that person will never, likewise, receive the Helper, the Holy Spirit.  Therefore, the unforgivable sin is to never open one’s heart in sincerity, humility, and obedience to the gift – the salvation that God offers through His One and only Son Jesus.

This is a promise that to receive Jesus is to receive His Holy Spirit.

Jesus came to offer forgiveness to everyone, everywhere.  His offer of forgiveness is always on the table, but the gift of receiving His Holy Spirit is only receivable for those who accept the gift and make the commitment to a new life in Christ Jesus.  The unforgivable sin is to never open your heart to Jesus – to never ask Him to forgive your sins – to never declare Jesus you Savior.  The Apostle Paul describes it well in Romans 10:9-10 (NIV), “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”  If a person never does this, then that person is committing the unforgivable sin.  But it is never too late to do so as long as you are living in this physical world.  As long as you can speak to God in your heart and believe in Him and the gift He offers to you in His One and only Son Jesus, you can be saved!  If you feel God speaking to your heart today, then today is the day of salvation if you will believe in Him and accept His gift of salvation in Christ Jesus today!

Dear LORD,

We have learned today that the unforgivable sin is to never open our hearts to receive salvation in Christ Jesus as this is the only way to receive in obedience, humility, and sincerity your Holy Spirit into our hearts, and into our lives to change our sinful lives to a renewed life in Christ Jesus and the guidance that only comes through Your Holy Spirit living in our hearts.  Please give us understanding of this passage so that we all may experience forgiveness and a new life in Christ Jesus being filled with Your Holy Spirit for eternity in Your glory.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
