Mark 9:14-16

In Mark 9:14-16 the Bible teaches us that as Jesus, Peter, James, and John return to the other disciples, they find them “disputing” (Mark 9:14, NKJV) with the scribes. At this time, Jesus had not yet sent His Holy Spirit to live within those who believe in Him because He was still with them physically. In His absence, disputes and chaos break out, but in His presence is peace. Jesus teaches us in John 14:26-27, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

This is an example of the peace that Jesus brings into our lives.

When Jesus was absent from the people, an uneasiness broke out and disputes arose; but when Jesus was present, the attitude immediately changes to focus on Him; the dispute ceased, and Jesus sought a remedy for the issue. Jesus lives with us today and His presence is always with us through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. We can and do have the peace of Christ Jesus living within us today for everyone who puts their faith in Him – for everyone who professes Jesus to be Lord and believes in their hearts that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9-10). In John 14:18 Jesus has promised, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” We live with this advantage of God’s Holy Spirit living within us that the disciples did not experience until after Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus is with us always and gives us His peace. When trials or tribulations come your way, call on the peace-giving name of Jesus and put your focus on Him – His peace will comfort you.

Dear LORD,

We believe in You and in the peace that You give us through our salvation in Christ Jesus and the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit. But when trials and tribulations strike, we have a tendency to revert to trying to overcome them on our own. Please prompt us through Your Holy Spirit living within us to put our focus on Jesus and allow the peace that He gives us to fill our souls. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
