Mark 9:11-13

The disciples have witnessed Jesus with Moses and Elijah. They have been instructed to not tell this to anyone until after Jesus has risen from the dead. They are left somewhat confused and curious about what all this means. They are knowledgeable of the Scriptures telling that Elijah must come teaching repentance (Malachi 4:5), and they have just seen with their own eyes that he has indeed come. But many questions plague the three, so they asked Jesus about Elijah (Mark 9:11). Jesus replies in Mark 9:12 (NKJV), “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13But I say to you that Elijah has also come, and they did to him whatever they wished, as it is written of him.”

This is an example of the Old Testament prophecies being fulfilled in the New Testament.

Peter, James, and John have witnessed miraculous things that they themselves cannot explain. But they knew that this must have had something to do with what had been foretold in the Scriptures. They had the privilege of learning directly from Jesus as He led them step by step as they grew in their relationships with Him. They were able to ask Jesus directly of questions they had for Him.

As we live today in hindsight of these events, and knowing the outcome of the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are blessed to have His Holy Spirit living within us to be our guide to life; but not simply this earthly, physical life, but life everlasting. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” We have God’s Holy Spirit living within us to be our guide; and we have been instructed to ask of God, to seek His will for our lives, and to apply these things into our lives. But we must act on them instead of simply sitting around waiting for God to do something without our asking. God wants to hear from you every day in building His relationship with you…ask Him and you will see results in your life.

Dear LORD,

Please help us today and every day to understand that You want to hear from us; You want us to come to You with our needs and desires; You want us to come to You in prayer seeking Your will for our lives as You patiently wait for us to put our hopes and desires of Your Holy Spirit working in our lives into action. But please help us to know that we must ask; it is our dependence on You as our Almighty God to come to You…and simply and humbly…ask. In Jesus name I pray that we all come to You in prayer each day, amen.
