Mark 6:7-13

Jesus has taught His disciples, by His own example, of the power of God to heal from sickness and demon possession.  In Mark 6:7-13 Jesus commissions His twelve disciples to go out and do as He has done.  But He commands them to rely on God to supply their needs as they were not allowed to take with them any money, extra clothing, nor food – just a staff.  Jesus commanded them to stay at one place while they preached the message of the gospel and healed people.  This would allow time to build relationships that would produce trustworthy bonds with the people of the community.  Also, Jesus gave one last command as He states in Mark 6:11 (NKJV), “And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them.  Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”  This is an important testimony against the unbelieving Jews as they were accustomed to “shake the dust off their sandals” when they returned to their own country after passing through a Gentile land.  This was in belief that even the dust from a Gentile land was impure and would cause anything it got on to become impure as well.  Jesus, by commanding His disciples to follow this same tradition, would leave a standing impression against whomever it was exhibited, including the unbelieving Jews.  Jesus declares, “Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”  (Mark 6:11b).

This is an example of the healing power of Jesus unto all who will believe in Him.

This is an example of the judgment for all who will refuse Jesus.

Jesus did not conceal His healing powers to Himself but shared them with His disciples that they too could continue sharing the gospel and healing those in need.  Jesus’ disciples questioned Him in Matthew 17:19 of why they could not heal a boy from a demon possession.  The answer Jesus gave is applicable for us still today as He states in Matthew 17:20, “Because of our unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”  Jesus was teaching His disciples to believe in Him, and when they did, miraculous things began to happen in their lives and was reflective in the lives of those around them.  We too can reflect the power of God through our faith and it can be seen in the lives of those we interact with – in Christ!

Dear LORD,

Your power is great in healing for all who will put their faith in Jesus.  Please help us to overcome the doubt that Satan binds us with that we too may stand victorious in Christ Jesus and that it may be seen in the lives of those around us as well.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
