Mark 5:9-10

It is revealed in Mark 5:9 that this man with “an unclean spirit” (Mark 5:2, NKJV) is actually possessed by many unclean spirits.  When Jesus asked him what his name was, he replied, “My name is Legion; for we are many.”  But being many, and in so may lead us to think that because this man is possessed by many demons, and that he could not be bound by man (Mark 5:3-4), that he could not be defeated as the Bible teaches us in Mark 5:4d, “neither could anyone tame him.”  However, this man (or what I believe to be the demons speaking through the man) begged Jesus “earnestly that He would not send them out of the country” (Mark 5:10).  The main point that we need to learn from the Bible in this passage is that the demons, being many, and powerful – so powerful that they could not be tamed by man, were in utter fear of the Lord; they were fearful of what punishment the Lord might bind them with.

This is a promise that Jesus is more powerful than all the demons that Satan may send to torment us.

This is a promise that if we will call on the name of Jesus when the demons of Satan attack us, simply hearing the name of Jesus will make them flee.

This is a promise – if you will believe in Jesus.  He will come to you; He will not leave you an orphan (John 14:18).

This proves the power of the Lord Jesus Christ is more powerful than that of the demons.  The earthly brother (or to be better spoken we may note; half-brother of Jesus), James, who did not believe in Jesus being the Son of God until after His death, burial, and resurrection, and then became the leader of the Church in Jerusalem declares in his epistle James 2:19, “You believe that there is one God.  You do well.  Even the demons believe – and tremble!”

If you will believe in Jesus today; if you will make a commitment to Him – to strive to follow the teachings that He leads us in the Bible of how we should conduct our lives as children of God – if you will sincerely open your heart to receive God’s Holy Spirit to live within you and be your guide – if you will profess Jesus to be your Savior and believe that God raised Him from the dead in victory over sin, death, and Satan – if you will put your trust in Him, He will save you from all the demons that may ever attack you – He will set you free from the chains of the devil that bind you in sin, and give you a new life – a miraculous new life – in Christ!  Call on the name of Jesus when Satan attacks, and the power of Jesus will overcome the devil for you…and the devil will flee!  We learn these things in John 1:12-13, 3:16-18, 14:15-18, 26-27; Romans 10:9-11; and 1 Peter 5:6-11.

Dear LORD,

We know that You are more powerful than all the demons of Satan as You are more powerful than Satan himself.  Please inspire us today to call out to Jesus for help in saving us from the demonic forces, the principalities, the powers, the rulers of the darkness of this age, from the spiritual hosts of wickedness, that we may be able to stand in the evil day, having done all to stand by putting on the whole armor of God that we would be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might as the Apostle Paul teaches us in Ephesians 6:10-18.  Please let it be so LORD.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
