Mark 5:35-36

In Mark 5:25-34 we have learned that a woman was healed because she believed in the healing power of Jesus – that if she could simply touch the edge of His clothing as He passed by, she could be healed – and she was, because of her faith in Jesus.  But this happened while Jesus was on His way to the house of the synagogue ruler (Mark 5:21-24).  The Bible teaches us in Mark 5:35-36 (NKJV), “35While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, ‘Your daughter is dead.  Why trouble the Teacher any further?’

36As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe.’”

While traveling to this man’s house whose daughter was deathly ill, a woman was healed because she believed; and now as this man receives word that his daughter has died, Jesus replies to the man, “Do not be afraid; only believe” (Mark 5:36).  The very moment that the bad news arrived, Jesus commanded, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”

This is a command to not be afraid but to replace the fear with belief in the healing power of Jesus.

We all face many different situations in which this advice is applicable.  In this world of uncertainty, we need to have faith like that of the woman who was healed because of her belief in the power of Jesus to take care of her needs.  The fears that we face in this world are real, but so is the eternal healer – Jesus – who is now working through His Holy Spirit for all who will believe in Him.  Jesus declares in John 4:23-24, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.  God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  Jesus declares in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  Come to the Father God of heaven through Jesus today by professing Him your Savior and believing that God has raised Him from the dead in victory over sin, death, and the devil.

Dear LORD,

The catalyst for our faith in You and the salvation that You offer us through Your One and only Son Jesus is that we believe in You and that You sent Your One and only Son Jesus to pay the price for sin for us – to save us from sin – all our sins and the sins of all the world.  Please help us to believe!  Jesus declares in Mark 9:23, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”  Please help us to believe in this way LORD that we may experience Your miracles of healing in our own lives.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
