Mark 2:5

As Jesus is preaching the word (Mark 2:2), and a paralytic is lowered through the roof so that Jesus could see him, with intentions that Jesus would heal him, Jesus goes a step farther and does not simply heal the man’s physical impairment, but He says to the paralytic as we learn in Mark 2:5 (NKJV), “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

This is an example of the power of Jesus to forgive sins.

This is an example of the power of Jesus to heal us beyond what we bring to Him.

The word of the healing power of Jesus had spread throughout the whole region (Mark 1:25-28), and people began coming to Him for physical healing.  After Jesus had healed many people of physical impairments and cast out demons (Mark 1:34,39), He then made the connection of His healings to the true healing for which He came to earth – to heal the impairment of sin.  As this paralytic is brought to Him through an opening in the roof and lowered down to Him for physical healing, Jesus says to Him, “Son, your sins are forgiven you” (Mark 2:5).  This radical statement by Jesus will cause a stir among the people, and should cause a stir in our hearts of the forgiveness that Jesus offers to all who will come to Him and believe in Him.  The Bible teaches us in John 1:12-13, “but as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Dear LORD,

You are the great Healer, both physically and spiritually.  Please help us to see that it is the healing of our hearts through the forgiveness of sin that You desire most to heal us, and put within our hearts the desire to seek You and humble ourselves to the point of the paralytic being lowered through the roof into a crowded room to reach Jesus in our own needs for healing and forgiveness of sin.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
