Mark 1:9-11

We learn in Mark 1:9 that Jesus came from Nazareth, which was a less than honorable place (John 1:46, NKJV) as Nathanael declares, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”, but the prophecy of Isaiah 9:1-7 tells of a light shining on this nation.  In Isaiah 9:6 states,

“For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His

Shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

We also learn in Mark 1:9 that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river.  This shows us two things: (1) that Jesus did not raise Himself above the example that He set for us all in being baptized.  (2) in the moment of the baptism of Jesus is represented all three persons of the Trinity; The Father speaking in Mark 1:11 declaring, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”, the Son Jesus being baptized, (Mark 1:9), and the Holy Spirit, “descending upon Him like a dove” (Mark 1:10).

This is an example and declaration of God Almighty, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit proclaiming their relationship to one another as one in three persons.

Jesus came to save the world from sin (John 3:17).  It is only right that He would come from an earthly place in need of Him and the salvation that God provides from Him.  His being baptized represents the example for us to follow as He proclaimed His relationship with God the Father through the Holy Spirit.  As we put our trust in Jesus as our Savior, we too should follow the example of Jesus and be baptized to proclaim our relationship with Him as He is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see the importance and relationship of the Trinity, being God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit as three of the same but with separate roles within the One.  And please help us to see the importance of following the example that Jesus set for us, not only in being baptized but in following His teachings of the way to eternal life in heaven.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
