Mark 15:38-39

As Christianity is born, it is very important that we realize and understand the significance of Mark 15:38 (NKJV) which states, “38Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” In Mark 15:37 Jesus “breathed His last”; Jesus died physically on the cross. The very next verse in the Bible states, “38Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Why would this be noted immediately after Jesus died? Why is this the most important thing for Mark to inform us of through his inspiration from God’s Holy Spirit to write this immediately after Jesus died? The reason is because this is the door to righteousness in Christ Jesus being opened. This is the door of Christianity being opened to all who will go through it and begin a new “reborn” life in Christ Jesus as He has now paid the price for sin. We learn about the veil of the temple and of its purpose in Exodus 26:31-33 as the Bible teaches, “You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. It shall be woven with an artistic design of cherubim. You shall hang it upon the four pillars of acacia wood overlaid with gold. Their hooks shall be gold, upon four sockets of silver. And you shall hang the veil from the clasps. Then you shall bring the ark of the Testimony in there, behind the veil. The veil shall be a divider for you between the holy place and the Most Holy.” It was this veil that was torn from top to bottom at the moment Jesus died on the cross (Mark 15:38). The divider between God and man was torn apart as Jesus made the way for us to return to God. Exodus 16 describes “inside the veil” as being the place where God would appear, and was believed to be the dwelling place, on earth, for God. The veil separated this place being “Most Holy” from the sinful world of man.

This is the significance of the veil being torn at the moment Jesus died on the cross.

Jesus opened the door/veil that had been closed to man since the beginning of sin on earth. When this veil was torn from top to bottom at the moment Jesus died on the cross, it opened the way to God for man. Jesus declared in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The way is now opened for all who will put their faith in Jesus.

Dear LORD,

Jesus opened the door to You for us all in His sinless death, defeating death, sin, and the devil once for all (Romans 6:10). It is only fitting that as the Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 6:11, “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Please let it be so LORD. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
