Mark 15:1-5
In Mark 15:1-5 Jesus is taken to Pilate, the Roman official put in place to oversee that region. The main charge that the chief priests are charging Jesus with is blasphemy (Mark 14:63-64). Mark 15:2 (NKJV) records the words of Pilate to Jesus, and the answer Jesus gives as he asks, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus replies, “It is as you say.” The chief priests brought many accusations against Jesus, but Jesus kept quiet and did not answer to these charges. Mark 1:5 states, “But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.”
This is the fulfillment of Isaiah 53:7 declaring,
“He was oppressed and He was
afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is
silent,
So He opened not His mouth.”
Being under the Roman authority, the chief priests, scribes, and the elders had no authority to put someone to death; it was a requirement for these charges to be taken to the Roman authority for approval. The fate of our Savior Jesus now lies in the hands of not only the Jewish authority, but the Gentile authority as well. All are now responsible for the death of Jesus. This is not simply a Jewish dilemma as the Gentiles are taken into God’s great plan of salvation. The Bible teaches us in John 1:10-13, “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
Dear LORD,
Jesus stood our trial; He was beaten and battered for us; He was spit on and cursed. Please help us to see His arms wide open to receive us in salvation; please help us to see His compassion for us, that we would run not away from Him but to Him and embrace Your gift to all who will believe in Him. Please let it be so LORD. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
