Mark 14:53-54

To begin our study of Mark 14:53-54 we must first look back to Mark 14:43-50 which teaches us about the arrest of Jesus, then Mark has inserted a piece about his being ripped from his clothes in his successful attempt to flee the multitude that came to seize Jesus. This multitude, that was sent from the chief priests, scribes, and the elders, led Jesus to the assembly of these leaders to stand trial before them. In Mark 14:54 we learn that Peter followed at a distance until he came to the place where the servants had gathered by a fire.

This is an example of following Jesus at a distance, as to not be noticed.

Jesus declares in Matthew 5:14 (NKJV), “You are the light of the world.” And He continues in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” But we may ask, “What exactly is the ‘light’ that is to shine from us to bring glory to our Father in heaven?” The Bible teaches us in John 1:6-9, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” That “Light” is Jesus, and He shines His Light through us from His Holy Spirit living within us who “believe” in Him (John 14:15-18, 23, 26). We cannot hide in the shadows and let the light of Jesus shine through us, but sometimes as God allows us to walk in the shadows for a bit, is to help us to grow into the person He desires us to be – in Christ, just as we will soon see in the life of Peter.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that the good works that You desire of us is not to bring attention to ourselves, but as Jesus states in Matthew 5:16, that through our good works others would see You LORD working in our lives to bring glory to You – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
