Mark 14:41-43

In Mark 14:41 the Bible teaches us that Jesus returned from praying a third time to find His disciples sleeping once again. Jesus had been seeking support from His disciples in prayer, but as we know, Jesus was to take the sins of the world upon His own shoulders with no help from anyone in this mission as it is Jesus and only Jesus who was to save the world from sin (John 1:29, 3:16-17). Jesus knows that His betrayer is coming (Mark 14:42) and is saddened in His physical state that He has been left to defend Himself with no support. In Mark 14:43, Judas, His disciple that would betray Him, arrives from the direction of the chief priests, scribes, and the elders with a multitude armed with swords and clubs.

This is an example and promise that Jesus was to take the sins of the world upon Himself with no help from anyone else as He and He alone is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6a).

No one comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14:6b). If the disciples of Jesus would have been praying for Jesus in this event, then we could feasibly claim that His disciples were partly responsible for the salvation of mankind, but God’s great plan of salvation is perfect; His plan for us is perfect; we cannot save ourselves from sin or be of any assistance to Jesus in what He did for us on the cross – it is Jesus and Jesus alone who saved the world from sin – it is our responsibility only to accept what Jesus has done for us by believing in Him and putting our faith in Him by professing Him our Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10).

Dear LORD,

Jesus knows what it feels like to be betrayed; He knows what it feels like to be abandoned. But because He experienced these things, He knows how to comfort us and the kind of comforting we need. Please help us to believe that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life that leads us to eternal life in heaven with You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
