Mark 14:39-40

Jesus has left His disciples strategically placed to keep watch as He knows His betrayer is coming; He has instructed Peter, James, and John (His three disciples that were the closest to Him) to “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation”, after He had returned to them from praying alone and found them sleeping (Mark 14:38, NKJV).

We learn in Mark 14:39 that Jesus went away from them once again to pray. The Bible teaches us that Jesus prayed the same words that He had already prayed the first time He left His disciples to go pray alone. Jesus, once again in His physical body and requirement to feel the pain and suffering of humanity, cried out to God for another way. But as we learn in John 14:6, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. John 14:6 also teaches us that no one comes to the Father except through Him. And when He returned, He found His disciples asleep once again (Mark 14:40). Peter, James, and John were this time left speechless as they were caught in their disobedience to the instructions Jesus had left them with.

This is an example that we are weak unto temptation whenever we are not in the presence of Jesus.

God’s Holy Spirit had not yet been revealed to the disciples of Jesus because He was with them physically. But when He was not physically with them, they fell to even the most common and simple of temptations. Jesus came to do the physical work required by the Law to set us free from sin, and He did the spiritual work to be the way to eternal life, to be truth in a world full of lies, and to be the life that redeems our lives and restores our place in His righteousness as the glory of God.

Today we have Jesus with us always through His Holy Spirit living within us as we put our faith in Him and profess Him our Lord and Savior (John 14:15-18, 23, 26). Even the most common and simple temptations cast upon us by the devil cannot be overcome without the help of Jesus – the way to salvation in truth and life. Please quit trying to defeat the devil on your own as he is more powerful than you, but Jesus has already defeated the devil for you; you just have to believe in Him as your Lord and Savior. Put Jesus first in your life today and experience salvation and the defeat of the devil in your life – forever – in Christ!

Dear LORD,

You are awesome as per the definition of leaving us in awe of Your great power to save us from the evils of the devil. Please help us to believe in the way, the truth, and the life that is Jesus as He felt our pain and died for our sins so that He may set us free from them. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
