Mark 14:32-34

Jesus and His disciples have finished the Passover/Lord’s Supper and have now arrived in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus has taken only Peter, James, and John with Him deeper into the garden as He has left the other disciples to stay at a distance (Mark 14:32-33). The Bible teaches us in Mark 14:33b-34 (NKJV), that Jesus then, “began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.” Jesus then goes even deeper into the garden to pray alone.

This is the time of preparation for Jesus to present Himself as, “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

Jesus is aware of the events that are about to take place; that He will be arrested, beaten, falsely accused, found guilty, and crucified. He knows that He is innocent of the things He will be accused of, but He also knows that it is His innocence and sinlessness that, in death, will be the that which defeats death. The Bible teaches us in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus knows that He is about to save the world from sin, but in His requirement in His human body is the requirement to feel the pain and suffering that comes with it. His prayer is that of a Warrior Savior that has a compassion for humanity that goes above anything we could ever imagine. He and He alone is the Lamb that was found worthy to take away the sin of the world! (John 1:29).

Dear LORD,

It is amazing that as this Bible lesson kicks off the week heading into Easter. Your timing is perfect; it is not by my planning that this week we will study the events leading up to the crucifixion of our Savior Jesus, but by Your Holy Spirit working through this ministry and in our lives to lead us to Christ. Thank You LORD for Your guidance and the gift of eternal life – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
