Mark 14:1-2

In Mark 14:1-2 we learn that the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were about to take place. The scribes were seeking of how they might trick Jeus into something that would deem Him guilty so that they could kill Him, but they decided to wait until after the Passover so that the people would not become upset with their actions.

This is an example of how the ways of man/the earthly nature as imputed to man through sin is always seeking a way to remove Jesus from our lives.

This passage is filled with irony as the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were the commands of God when He set His people free from the captivity of the Egyptians (Exodus 11-12). The Passover lamb (a lamb without blemish) was to be kept within the house of each family for four days (as if to become attached to it – can you imagine how your children would become attached to a lamb that lived in your house with you?), and then the lamb without blemish was to be killed with it’s blood placed on the doorposts and the header of the house (as if in the shape of a cross). When the LORD “passed over” the land and saw the blood of the lamb on the doorposts and the header of a house, He would “pass over” that house and not kill that family’s firstborn (Exodus 12:13). Also, the LORD commanded one law for the native born and for the foreigner who believed in God. God declares in Exodus 12:48 (NKJV), “And when a stranger dwells with you and wants to keep the Passover to the LORD, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as a native of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it. One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.” The Feast of Unleavened Bread was to commemorate the Exodus from the captivity of the Egyptians as the LORD commanded the Israelites to leave in haste, having no time to allow the yeast/leaven to raise the bread for food, but to make bread without yeast/leaven so they could be ready to leave at a moments notice (Exodus 12:12-20). Jesus has just taught about being ready (Mark 13:32-36), and He would, during this Passover become the Lamb that was slain whose blood takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). Is this an ironic coincidence?, maybe; is it the miraculous work of God unto salvation for all people?, Yes it is!

Dear LORD,

Please open our eyes to this connection between the Old Testament and the New Testament as You reveal Your great plan of salvation for everyone who will put their faith in You. The Apostle Paul declared in Galatians 3:29, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Please let it be so LORD – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
