Mark 13:28-31

In Mark 13:28-31 Jesus responds more directly to the question originally asked of Him by His disciples (Peter, James, John, and Andrew) in Mark 13:3-4 in reference to Jesus’ comment in Mark 13:2 (NKJV) stating, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Jesus adds in Mark 13:30-31, “30Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. The great building blocks of the temple would soon be destroyed to a point in which there is a question of where exactly the temple stood, but the words of Jesus unto salvation are eternal.

This is a promise that the things of this earth, regardless of how great they are, will pass away, but the life-gift of salvation in Christ Jesus will last forever.

We have a tendency to focus on the things of this world that are great by our own standards, but one day everything – every great tall building or structure will eventually decay. Jesus was trying to get His disciples to put their focus on Him and the gift of eternal life that is so much more important than the things of this world. He came to save the world from sin, and an important aspect of realizing the gift of salvation in Christ Jesus is to understand that we need to put Him first in our lives in our humility and obedience to God.

Dear LORD,

Eternal life is found in the words of Jesus, and then by our understanding and realizing of their importance in our lives as He states in Mark 13:31, “31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Please open our hearts to this truth – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
