Mark 12:35-37

The Pharisees, the Sadducees, the scribes, the chief priest, and the elders all have been trying to trick Jesus with tough questions that they hoped He could not answer (Mark 11:27-12:34). In Mark 12:35-37 (NKJV) Jesus then, after quieting them from their own questions, asks them a question in which they cannot answer. Jesus ask them, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:

‘The LORD said to my Lord,

            “Sit at My right hand,

Till I make Your enemies Your

                        footstool.” ‘ [Psalm 110:1]

37Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?” There is then no answer by the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the scribes, the chief priest, and the elders, and there is no explanation given by Jesus other than that, “the common people heard Him gladly” (Mark 12:37b).

This is a promise and example that God/Jesus is smarter than we are, and as we try to force Him to our ways, He will prove to us that His way is much better.

The Pharisees, the Sadducees, the scribes, the chief priest, and the elders could not answer the question Jesus presented to them, but we know the answer as it is revealed to us in God’s Word/the Bible. In Matthew 1 is the genealogy of Jesus, which leads through David to Jesus, thus making David an earthly father of Jesus. But Jesus is also the Son of God as God in human form; this makes Jesus Lord of David.

Dear LORD,

You have made a connection to us in human form as well as in Spirit. It is through Your mighty work that we are able to come to You today and understand our relationship with You better. Jesus stated in John 4:23-24, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Please let it be so LORD in all our lives – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
