Mark 10:46-52

In Mark 10:46-52 is the healing of a blind man named Bartimaeus. As Jesus and His disciples walked through Jericho [a place where God’s army led by Joshua, through faith, followed God’s instructions to defeat Jericho as the walls came tumbling down (Joshua 6)], the news of Jesus came to Bartimaeus, and he began crying out to Jesus to have mercy on him (Mark 10:47). But those around him warned him to be quiet as the condescension becomes obvious as the author even refers to him not as a named person but as “blind Bartimaeus”, a name surely given to him by those who knew him and saw him from day to day sitting by the roadside begging (Mark 10:46).

But Jesus heard his cries and asked to have Bartimaeus brought to Him (Mark 10:49). Jesus then, as the healing power of Jesus must have been expected at this point by everyone in attendance, heals Bartimaeus, but not before Jesus asks him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51, NKJV). Bartimaeus replied, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight” (Mark 10:51). The answer Jesus gives him is, “Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road” (Mark 10:52).

This is an example of having faith in Jesus.

Jesus said words to Bartimaeus that we all need to hear, “Go your way; your faith has made you well” (Mark 10:52). Without faith in Jesus it is impossible for Him to work in our lives and save us from sin. In John 1:12-13 the Bible teaches us, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” The Apostle John teaches us in John 20:30-31, “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” God is love (1 John 4:8), but in order for us to truly feel God’s love in our lives, we must accept His love for us and express our love for Him in return to make the circle complete. Believe in Jesus today and begin a new life in Christ as you accept and return God’s love for you to Him by professing Jesus your Savior, and believing in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9-10), and you will be saved from sin as your faith in God becomes a reality.

Dear LORD,

You are mighty to heal. Please help us to have the faith of Bartimaeus and join in the celebration of Your love for us, and of our accepting it and returning our love and faith to You through believing in Jesus our Savior – the Savior of the world!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
