Mark 10:35-45

In Mark 10:35-45 James and John come to Jesus and ask Him to allow them to sit at His right hand and left hand in His glory. Jesus replies in Mark 10:40 (NKJV), “40but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.” When the other disciples heard of this, they became displeased with what James and John had asked of Jesus as they are drawn into the trap of attempting to develop an order among themselves of who is better than another. Jesus explains God’s view of being great to them as He declares in Mark 10:42-45, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

This is a promise that the one who serves others is the greatest in the eyes of God.

There are many ways to serve in our calling from God, and we are all called to serve in some way, shape, or form – it is part of being a Christian as the One in which we are to strive to imitate in our lives is the One who came to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Jesus has added another element to being a follower of God in that, as Jesus has already taught that we must put God first in our lives over and above the things/possessions of this world, we must also seek not to be served as if we are better than others, but to be the servant; as Jesus is the servant of all, we too must serve one another – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

Jesus is teaching us what it means to be a Christian and of how we should strive to live our lives in servanthood. Our desires are to be the people that You desire us to be. Please let it be so in all our lives – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
