Luke 9:43-45
The crowd was amazed at the power of God working through Jesus as He healed a demon-possessed child that the disciples could not help (Luke 9:37-42). Jesus then proceeds to teach His disciples about His upcoming betrayal and crucifixion but does not allow them to understand what He was saying, and yet the disciples were afraid to ask Him about what He had said (Luke 9:43-45). It is possible that Jesus did not allow His disciples to understand what He was saying because it could have been too much for them to grasp. Jesus makes a similar comment in John 16:12 (NKJV) while He is teaching His disciples about the coming of the Holy Spirit as He declares, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.”
This is an example that as we are amazed with the power of God as He works through His Son Jesus, we are timid in asking Him of how He can work in our own lives.
We all see and are amazed at the power of God as He works around us each day. We cry out to God when we are in need. We say things like, “praise God” when something amazing happens around us. We hear and read about the saving power of Jesus. Yet we are afraid to approach Jesus with our sincere, humble, repentance because we do not truly understand what He is saying to us as He speaks to our hearts through His Holy Spirit. Studying God’s Word and spending time in prayer with Him each day will help us to open ourselves to Him and begin living the life that He has prepared for us through His Son Jesus. As we seek Him, He will begin to reveal His great love to us and give us an understanding for His plan for our lives in allowing us to experience the way, the truth, and the life that is only found in Jesus (John 14:6). The Apostle Paul speaks of this in Colossians 1:27-29 as he declares, “To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.”
Dear Lord,
Please help us to understand the things that You are speaking to our hearts through Your Holy Spirit. Please give us the strength and faith to submit our lives to You and seek Your plan for our lives in turning from the sinful nature and putting on a new life in Christ Jesus who died for our sins that we may live through Him. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
