Luke 9:12-17

The Twelve disciples were learning to be compassionate for others; they were concerned about the crowd to have an opportunity to get food for the evening. But after having returned from proclaiming the kingdom of God and healing the sick, of which Jesus had empowered them to do (Luke 9:1-2), they were still learning to trust the power of Jesus in and for all situations that they may encounter.

Jesus blessed the five loaves and the two fish (Luke 9:16) and He continued to hand it to the disciples until everyone had been fed, which was about 5,000 men (Luke 9:14). Some believe that the total size of the crowd was possibly as many as 15,000 to 20,000 because the number 5,000 is noted to be only the men and is believed to not include the number of the women and children. When they were all finished, the disciples gathered a miraculous twelve baskets full of left-over pieces (Luke 9:17). The miracle of feeding this very large crowd with five loaves and two fish is now obvious. Jesus took action to care for everyone in the crowd and His efforts were sufficient, with leftovers!

This is an example of the power of Jesus being sufficient to fulfill the needs of everyone.

Jesus is more than sufficient to fulfill the needs of everyone. He will never send us away to fend for ourselves. In this Bible passage, Jesus continued to give until everyone was satisfied. He is still giving today of eternal life to all who will receive Him. Jesus proclaims in John 3:16 (NKJV), “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Dear Lord,

Thank You for reminding us in this passage that Jesus is sufficient to fulfill all our needs. Thank You that Jesus died on the cross with His arms open wide as to receive us to Himself as He paid the price for all our sins and now offers us the gift of life in and through believing in Him. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
