Luke 8:40-42a

Jesus and His disciples had traveled across the lake (Luke 8:22) and are now returning to where they had left the crowd of people (Luke 8:4). The crowd was waiting for Jesus as they were expecting Him to return (Luke 8:40). Before Jesus and His disciples traveled across the lake and back, He had been traveling from town to town teaching the people about the kingdom of God.

Jairus, a leader of the synagogue (Luke 8:41) would have been expected to be critical of Jesus’ ministry, however, Jairus is found to be in need and has become aware of his insufficiencies to aid his daughter who is on her deathbed (Luke 8:42).

Jairus had a need that he could not meet on his own. He came to Jesus, the One who has been healing people, and fell at His feet pleading with Him to come to his house and heal his daughter (Luke 8:41-42). When Jairus found himself with nowhere else to turn, he turned to Jesus.

This is an example of a man being humbled to the point of realizing his need for Jesus.

This is an example of a man’s worldview being changed when he has found himself insufficient.

This is an example of a man who has come to realize his need for help.

We all desire to be in control of our lives and to have the ability to take good care of our families, but there will come a time when we realize that there are some circumstances in which we have no control. We may turn to other family members, doctors, or technology in seeking help, but when we realize that our soul is lost and we do not have the assurance of where we will spend eternity, there is only one place we can turn to find the help and the answer that will satisfy our soul; Jesus. He gave us the answer in John 14:6 (NKJV) when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” There is no better time to ask Jesus’ forgiveness and make a commitment to live for Him than today. Ask Jesus to forgive you, and watch how He will change your life.

Dear Lord,

When You open our eyes to our need for Jesus, as You did with Jairus, our worldview changes. When You touch our heart with Your Holy Spirit and allow us to see that we are lost without Jesus, our soul begins to ache for the healing that can only come from inviting Jesus into our hearts to cleanse us from sin. Jesus died with His arms wide open as to welcome each one who will come to Him for the forgiveness that He offers in dying in our place and paying the price for our sins. Please help us to see the importance and the need for Jesus in our lives so that we would fall as Jairus did at the feet of Jesus and ask for His help. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
