Luke 8:4-8

Please take note to Luke 8:4 (NKJV), “And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke a parable:” When Jesus walked the earth, people flocked to Him from everywhere. They wanted to hear His teaching; what He had to say that they may learn about the kingdom of God and what it means to be born again. Jesus stated to Nicodemus in John 3:3, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus used the parable in Luke 8:4-8 to relate to the people. Many of His hearers were farmers and would be able to relate to sowing seed. They would all be aware that seed sown on the path would be wasted as much of it would be trampled and crushed by the people and animals walking over it. It would be visible to the birds as they flew by and they would eat it as Jesus explains in Luke 8:5. Jesus then explains in Luke 8:6 that seed sown on rocky ground without the soil to base its roots would soon wither. Jesus goes on to explain in Luke 8:7 that seed sown among thorns would grow, but the thorns would use the water needed for the plant to yield its crop, resulting in a low harvest. And Jesus explains in Luke 8:8 that the seed sown on good ground would have a stable base to grow in and would produce a bountiful crop.

Jesus used this parable relating to the everyday life of the people to get their attention; to think about what He had said, and how that might relate to the message that He has come to share. Jesus also notes in Luke 8:8 that everyone will not be able to understand this parable, but for those who can, He states, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” This indicates that not everyone will accept His teachings unless one becomes willing to open themselves to His way of life.

This is an example of the message of Christ Jesus.

This is an example of how Jesus will call our attention to Him to seek His teaching.

As we share God’s Word and our testimony of how God has touched our lives, we may relate to sowing the seed as being a way, and a calling for every Christian, to share the message of the Gospel. As Jesus has shown us compassion and touched our hearts by ways in which we can personally relate to, we should seek ways to imitate that compassion in sharing the love of Jesus with others so that the door to their hearts may be opened and a path created for communication between Jesus and them.

Dear Lord,

We want to interpret Your Word properly, and in doing so, we must first seek how You reached out to the original audience that we read about in Your word. As we see how You touched the lives of those people, we may then relate that lesson to our lives today. When we learn the lessons that You are teaching us, we should then be compelled as Christians to share that lesson with others in our testimony of how You have worked in our lives so that You may use us to touch the lives of those around us to bring salvation to the world and glory to You. Please give us the strength and compassion to do so.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
