Luke 8:38-39
Jesus set this man free from the pain, anguish, and suffering of the many demons that had possessed him. This man, now given a new life by the power of Jesus, desires to be near Him and to stay with Him always. Jesus commissions this man as a disciple to, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you” (Luke 8:39, NKJV). The man, newly saved and joyful for being set free from the demons that controlled him, and under the command from Jesus to share with others what God has done for him, went about his way proclaiming the good news of Jesus (Luke 8:39).
This is an example of the change that Jesus makes in one’s life.
This is an example that regardless of our prior life in sin, Jesus can and will set us free from sin and give us a new life as a disciple of Christ Jesus.
It is important to notice that this man, even being possessed (Luke 8:30) by a “Legion” of demons, came to Jesus. The presence of Jesus is irresistible and will draw us to Him by the power of His Holy Spirit, but we must open our hearts to believe in Him. James 2:19 states, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!”
As Jesus gives us a new life, we should always, as this man did, desire to be near Him – and He is always near us through His Holy Spirit that now dwells within us. But as a new man in Christ, we should, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you” (Luke 8:39a). We should all be witnesses of how Jesus has changed our lives through forgiveness, and others should be able to see the change in our lives as we now seek His will for our lives.
Dear Lord,
When we accept Jesus into our hearts through Your Holy Spirit that You send to live within us, we should be excited to tell others of how You have changed our lives. Others should be able to see the change in our lives as we now begin producing the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Please give us the strength to present ourselves to those around us in a way that will show Your love in our lives and be pleasing to You Lord. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
