Luke 8:11-15

Jesus has spoken the parable, and He has acquired the attention of those who believe in Him and have made a choice to follow Him, being described in Luke 8:9 as being His “disciples.” To these, He is ready to explain the meaning of the parable.

Jesus is sowing the seed of the Word of God to this large crowd which contains all the types of people described in the parable. Luke 8:4 (NKJV) states, “4And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable:” Jesus is describing the importance of being His disciple; His disciples did not just hear the word and then allow the Devil to take it away from them (Luke 8:12), or fall away when their faith in Him is put to the test (Luke 8:13), or allow the worries of this world to prevent them from producing mature fruit, “But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience” (Luke 8:15). What is fruit, you might ask? The Apostle Paul teaches us in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

This is a fulfillment of the promise that Jesus will give understanding to those who seek Him.

This is where the sincerity of the intentions of our hearts becomes so important. Jesus knows, through His Holy Spirit, if we are sincere in our faith to Him. If we are sincerely seeking Jesus, He will give us understanding and help us grow in our relationship with our heavenly Father through salvation in Him. When we make the sincere choice to believe in Him, we will begin to see the fruit of the Spirit being produced in our lives.

Dear Lord,

Please help us to see that if we want to grow in our understanding of Your Word and our relationship with You through Your Son Jesus, we must seek You with a sincere heart. Please speak to our hearts and show us that You are there waiting with arms open to receive each of us through our faith in seeking You with a sincere heart. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
