Luke 8:1-3

The customs and roles of men and women during the time that Jesus walked the earth was different in many ways than that which we are used to today. While the men’s responsibility was tending the flock or providing a service that was to bring an income to the family, the women’s responsibility was to provide a service directly to the family in ensuring the well-being of each member of the family. The woman’s role was much more personal than the man’s role. The women looked to make sure that each member of the family was taken care of for the necessities of life; to take care of the things that the men’s financial service provided for the family. These customs and roles were not meant to be discriminating or even thought to be anything of the sort, but that each family member worked together to provide a “whole” for the success of the family.

The women mentioned in this passage (Luke 8:1-3) are the women who looked after the well-being of Jesus and His disciples. While we do not know exactly what their “possessions” consist of, we can be sure that each woman had acquired these things throughout their lives in abundance, along with the know-how of their experience in providing for others – which follows in the teaching of Jesus found in John 13:34-35 (NKJV), “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

These women, showing the love of Jesus in caring for Him and His disciples, are providing an example of what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus. Jesus first showed His love to these women by healing them, “of evil spirits and infirmities” (Luke 8:2) and being thankful for what Jesus has done for them, they have dedicated their lives to serving Him.

This is an example of serving Jesus.

This is an example that as Jesus shows the great love He has for us; we are compelled to then show to others that same caring love.

This is an example of the great healing power of Jesus.

We have different customs and roles for men and women today than during the time in which Jesus walked the earth. However, the main point of caring for one another and showing the love of Jesus is still the same. As Christians, Jesus has first rescued us from a life of living in sin and has given us a new life in Him. We should be compelled to show the love that He has shown us to those around us.  We should set a good example in representing Him to our families and the secular world in hopes that we can help lead others to experience the same love in Christ that He has shown to us. This is being a true disciple of Jesus.

Dear Lord,

We were all lost in sin before You showed us your great compelling love that enabled us to open our hearts to Jesus and accept forgiveness in Him. Please help us to show that same love to those around us so that we would be good representatives and disciples of Jesus. Whether men or women, we all have a responsibility to share the love of Christ with others. Thank You so much for this privilege as Your children. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
