Luke 7:6-10
Jesus has received testimony from those under authority concerning a fellow servant in need, and a positive testimony concerning the centurion (the one having authority). The centurion, also being under the authority of the Roman government, shows humility and respect for Jesus in a way that, in being placed in the Jewish community as a Roman overseer, sets a great example for the Jewish people of a proper faith in Jesus. This would have been extraordinary for the Jewish people as they believed that Jesus came to set them free from the captivity of the Roman government; the very person (people) that Jesus is about to help. The words that Jesus said in Luke 7:9b (NKJV), “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” is a personal testimony that He came to save the world, not just Israel. The result of the centurion’s faith in Jesus is that his servant was healed.
This is a fulfilling of the promise of John 3:17.
This is an example of the love that Jesus has for all people.
This is an example of living a life of faith in Jesus.
This Roman centurion would not have followed the works of the Law given to Moses. However, he had a greater faith in Jesus than all of Israel. This is a great example of the transition from the works of the Law to faith in Jesus. This does not mean that we should no longer do the works that the Bible teaches, but that by faith we receive salvation in Christ Jesus, and then, through a new life in Christ, our hearts are cleansed and our motives (which come from the heart) become sincere, giving us the proper attitude in doing the works that are in obedience to God as His children.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for giving us this account of inclusion in salvation for all of humanity, and that it is through salvation in Christ Jesus that we, through faith, are made whole by Your grace in forgiving us of our sins and giving us a pure heart that is capable of doing the works that are pleasing to You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
