Luke 7:1-5
Jesus has been speaking to a large crowd that had gathered from, “all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon” (Luke 6:17, NKJV) and now has entered Capernaum (Luke 7:1). In this passage (Luke 7:1-5) the Apostle Luke tells of a Gentile that is in need of Jesus. This is a clear example of someone other than a Jew that is showing faith in the healing power of Jesus. This would have been an eye-opening moment for the Jews that were present as they believed that Jesus, the Messiah, has come to save the Jews and only the Jews from the rule of the Roman authorities, which is the very person (centurion) that has called for Jesus to help him. It is obvious that this centurion is concerned whether or not Jesus will help him as he has instructed his servant to plead with Jesus to help him by informing Jesus, “because he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue” (Luke 7:5).
This is a promise that all people can call out to Jesus for help.
The centurion in this passage (Luke 7:1-5) has encountered a situation that is out of his control. He is frantically searching for a way in which his servant can be healed. He heard of Jesus and His healing power, and he believed. He put his faith in the healing power of Jesus. This centurion, someone who would have felt unworthy and outside of the circle of Jesus, shows a great faith in Jesus.
Many people feel unworthy and left out of any possibility of Jesus caring about them, but let this passage (Luke 7:1-5) be an example of the inclusion of all people being in the circle of the love of Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul teaches us in Galatians 3:26-28, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Dear Lord,
Please help us to see that Jesus died on the cross to save all people from sin. This includes everyone, even those who feel unworthy of forgiveness in Christ. Jesus has compassion on anyone who comes to Him with a sincere heart, and He waits for each of us to do so. His arms are open wide to receive and forgive each of us as they were when He died for our sins on the cross. Please help us to see that our needs are not too great for Jesus, and that He loves us and will forgive us if we will come to Him with a sincere heart and ask. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
