Luke 6:1-5

The Law of the Sabbath is recorded in Exodus 31:12-18 and states clearly in Exodus 31:14 NKJV, “You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.” Before entering the “Promised Land,” Moses reviewed the Law with the Israelites; Deuteronomy 23:25 states, “When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not use a sickle on your neighbor’s standing grain.”  The Pharisees viewed the actions of Jesus’ disciples rubbing the heads of the grain in their hands as unlawful work on the Sabbath, and in doing so, put their own interpretation of the Law above the actual Law as given to Moses by God. The Pharisees implemented their own rules and regulations as tradition to be followed but were not in accordance with the actual Law.

This is an example of how the Pharisees tried to twist God’s Word in seeking to accuse Jesus of wrongdoing.

Many people try to twist God’s Word into meaning what they want it to in trying to justify a wrongful way of living or to accuse Scripture to be false or contradicting. God’s Word is infallible and always supports itself when we read and study it thoroughly. Jesus knew this and used this example to show the Pharisees that He, “…is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Dear Lord,

Please help us to study Your Word in that we seek to find the true meaning of the lessons that You are teaching us through it. Please help us to not just take a verse or two and interpret it for whatever we will to justify our own way of living or to accuse others of being wrong.  But that we would seek the true meaning of Scripture through study, prayer and the study of how Your great plan of salvation is revealed through all of Scripture and how it all works together to bring glory to You Lord through Your Son Jesus, the Savior of the world. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
