Luke 4:5-8

Sin entered the world through temptation. Adam and Eve were led to believe that they would be like God if they ate the forbidden fruit. In Genesis 3:4-5 (NKJV), Satan speaks through the serpent to Adam and Eve, “Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Jesus is King. Satan tried to tempt Jesus by offering Him something that he did not have to start with; authority and glory. These are the very things that Satan was seeking to steal from God. The reason that Lucifer (Satan) was cast out of heaven is recorded in Isaiah 14:12-14 and states,

“How you are fallen from heaven,

O Lucifer, son of the morning!

         How you are cut down to the ground,

You who weakened the nations!

For you have said in your heart:

‘I will ascend into heaven,

I will exalt my throne above the stars

of God;

I will also sit on the mount of the

Congregation

On the farthest sides of the north;

I will ascend above the heights of the

clouds,

I will be like the Most High.’

We were created in God’s image. Satan tries to use this to keep us away from God as he tempts us with the desires to be our own gods. Revelation 4:11 states,

“You are worthy, O Lord,

To receive glory and honor and power;

For You created all things,

And by Your will they exist and were

created.”

Satan tries to make us believe that we are worthy to receive glory and honor and power. These things all point to “I” and not to God. We were created to bring glory to God in our physical lives in that we may enter into His glory in heaven when that day comes. Jesus quoted Scripture to overcome the temptation of the devil; we should do the same.

This is an example of the way in which the devil tries to keep us from God.

This is temptation, but in it we are always given a way out (1 Corinthians 10:12-13).

Satan believes that he owns the earth, as if it were his to rule over. He wants us to believe that he has power to give us things that we desire, but he is only capable of deceit, and there is no truth in him. Jesus tells us about Satan in John 8:44b, “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

Dear Lord,

Please help us to see that the grasp of the devil can only be broken through our faith in Christ Jesus. He defeated Satan for us so that we may be free from the chains of sin. Please open our eyes that we may see the gift of salvation in Jesus; that we would open our hearts to Jesus, repent, and receive Him through faith by Your grace. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
