Luke 3:10-11

Luke 3:8a (NKJV) states, “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance…” The people responded with a humble attitude by asking, “What shall we do then?” (Luke 3:10). John the Baptist responds by stating, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise” (Luke 3:11). These words are reflective of the teaching of Jesus as found in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

This is the ministry of John the Baptist according to the prophecy of Isaiah 40:3 proclaiming,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

“prepare the way of the LORD;

Make straight in the desert

A highway for our God.”

Many pastors and priests begin a sermon by telling a story that is reflective of the message that it is leading up to. John the Baptist’s ministry is a prelude to the teaching that is coming through the ministry of Jesus. We know that it is possible for John the Baptist to have this knowledge in his heart because the angel Gabriel informed Zacharias in Luke 1:15, “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.”

We too, should tell others about what the Lord has put into our hearts through His Holy Spirit that fills us when we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. As John the Baptist helped people prepare their hearts for the coming of Jesus, we can do the same.

Dear Lord,

You worked through John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus to begin His ministry. Please speak to our hearts that we too can share what You have put in our hearts with those around us that we would do our part in fulfilling the great commission given by Jesus in Mark 16:15, “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” In Jesus name I pray, amen.
