Luke 3:1-2

This sets up the historical political background during the time of John the Baptist and the ministry of Jesus. These rulers or governors can be traced through historical record and is one step of proving the truth of the Bible. While most of these names are rarely found in the Biblical text, Annas and Caiaphas are the high priests that led the campaign to crucify Jesus. Caiaphas is the high priest that prophesied Jesus should be sacrificed for all people as we learn in John 11:49-52 (NKJV), “And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.’ Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.”

This is an example of the historical proof of the Biblical text.

This is the political layout during the time of Jesus’ ministry on earth.

The above list of names, as provided by the Biblical text, may seem unimportant to us today, but this Biblical text is a proof that can be verified by historical record and helps authenticate the Biblical text. This is all tied together by including that during this time, “the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness” (Luke 3:2b).

Dear Lord,

Thank You for giving us the historical record of the Bible that can be verified by the secular historians. Our relationship with You is through our faith in You, yet You have given a way that those of the secular world who choose not to believe in You, have an undeniable record of the Biblical text that leaves them to live only in denial of life. Please speak to our hearts, that we would open our eyes to the reality of the Bible, and the reality of life eternal through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
