Luke 2:51-52

Jesus was twelve years old at this time (Luke 2:42). As a twelve year old Boy, He was still yet dependent on the humanly support and guidance of His earthly parents, as would be any other twelve year old boy. But as all other children are subject to the confines of the capacity of our learning ability, Jesus “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52, NKJV). Mary did not forget what the angel Gabriel had told her, and she watched and waited anxiously, yet patiently to see these things being revealed in her God-given Son.

This is an example of the human requirement to “grow” in connection with the divine being of the Christ Child.

We are all subject to our parents from childbirth and are in need of guidance as we grow and learn. We all can “increase in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52). It is important that we learn this about the Boy Jesus in connecting Him with His human side. His ultimate goal of paying the price for all man’s sin can only be accomplished if He takes the form of a human. Jesus was divinely created, and a divine being cannot exist with sin; it would be a contradiction of being. When Jesus was conceived, the divine conceiving overpowered the sinful nature and defeated it in Himself, just as He would die on the cross undeservingly as “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a) and pay the price for the sins of all man, yet Jesus was sinless.

Being sinless and yet dying caused a “mind-blow” to Satan and destroyed Satan’s whole concept of sin. And more than that, Jesus took any power that Satan had over man and created a way for man to overcome the power of Satan. This is what the Apostle Paul is referring to in 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 as he states, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”  Jesus is the way of escape. We cannot do it by ourselves, but we are able to do all things through Him that strengthens us. The Apostle Paul states in Galatians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  Jesus said to His disciples in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Dear Lord,

It is hard for us to grasp the human and the divine being of Jesus together in one. We also know that Your ways are greater than our ways, and we are not capable of understanding everything about You and our relationship with You. But that is where faith comes in; our relationship with You is based on our faith in You as the one and only true God of all. Please help us to commit our faith totally to You and believe that Jesus died for us to have a way out of the sin that surrounds us each day. Thank You God for being so awesome. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
