Luke 2:43-50

People came from many places to celebrate the Feast of the Passover in Jerusalem. When the events of the Feast of the Passover were completed, everyone returned to their own homes. As the journeys could take several days, it would not be uncommon for a child to travel with a friend or other family member. In this case the Boy Jesus was thought to have done so, but the fact that He had not left Jerusalem went unnoticed. He had stayed behind at the temple to study and discuss the Scriptures with the religious leaders.

Like any parents, Mary and Joseph were anxiously looking for their Son. They spent three days looking for Him; a number of significance in the life of Jesus as He would prophecy of His own death on the cross and resurrection being three days later. We learn in Matthew 12:38-40 (NKJV), “Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, ‘Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.’

“But He answered and said to them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.’” Also, and most significantly, God exists in the threefold of the Trinity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The reply of the Boy Jesus is the first words of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Luke.  He states in Luke 2:49, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Jesus would be about His Father’s business throughout His entire earthly life. Mary and Joseph did not yet understand the statement made by the Boy Jesus because Jesus had not yet begun His ministry. They were possibly still under the impression that Jesus would grow up to be King of Israel (as was King David) and lead the Israelites out of the oppressive rule of the Romans.  But Jesus came to defeat Satan for all of humanity, for all who will put their faith in Him. He came to win the spiritual battle that is fought inside each of our hearts and claim victory over sin, death, and Satan.

This is an example of the humanly and the Godly sides of Jesus. Even though He had to grow physically (human side), His spiritual side was as one with God (spiritual side).

Jesus was required to experience the Human side of life to grow physically just as anyone else. It was His spiritual side in being one with God that prevented sin from entering His life as His divinity kept Him pure. The Bible teaches us in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Satan was first created by God as an angel. After he fell from heaven (Ezekiel 28:11-19; Luke 10:18), he cannot then turn and command authority over his Creator who cast him out of heaven for attempting this very thing. Jesus is and always has been greater and more powerful than Satan.

Satan is, however, more powerful than man. The Bible teaches us in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” The only way for us to overcome the power and temptation of Satan is to put our trust and faith in Jesus, who was sent to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17).

Dear Lord,

Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to save the world from sin and the power of Satan. Please help us to be about Your business in our lives as was the Boy Jesus. Please help us to be as the Apostle Paul states in Ephesians 1:11-14, “In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

“In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” In Jesus name I pray, amen.
