Luke 2:15-20

Unlike the disbelief of Zacharias, who questioned the message brought to him by the angel Gabriel, the shepherds had no doubt about the message they received. They immediately went to see the Baby in Bethlehem and went so in “haste” (Luke 2:16, NKJV). The reward they received for being obedient to the message of the Lord is that they were given the privilege to announce, “made widely known” (Luke 2:17) the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Then the shepherds gave the praise and glory back to God who is rightfully deserving of all praise, glory, honor, and thanksgiving.

One other thing of importance is that Mary, having been informed of the importance of this Child, stores these things up in her heart. The one who gave birth to the Savior of the world who came to cleanse our hearts from sin, “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). The mother of Jesus was inclined to put Jesus in her heart; a lesson that we all need to learn and grasp with both hands, every day of our lives.

This is how God chose to spread the word that the Savior of the world is born.

This is a great example of how God works in His ways, which are beyond our comprehension, and then explains them to us through His Word.

Could God have chosen a better group of people to spread the news of the birth of the Christ-child? The shepherds travel across the countryside while tending their flocks and were able to share the good news of the birth of Jesus as they traveled. Jesus would soon travel the countryside tending His flock and sharing the Gospel (good news) of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus is the “good Shepherd” (John 10:11).

Dear Lord,

This is a great example of sharing Your greater plan of salvation for all people. You continue to use people in ways in which we would not think possible, such as the shepherds being held as a lowly people of society, and yet chosen to spread the good news of the birth of Your Son Jesus, who You sent to save the world from sin. We stand in awe of Your great plan of salvation through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. All praise, glory, honor, and thanksgiving be to You Lord. Thank You so much for sending Jesus, that all who believe in Him, and receive Him, may become Your children (John 1:12). In Jesus name I pray, amen.
